Not only did the master horseman win a third Cup with Smolda, he also registered his fourth double at the meeting in six seasons.
A Piccadilly Princess ($1.10 favourite) provided the first leg on Saturday by coasting home in the PETstock Assistance M1 Pace, 2200m – slipping home for the last 400m in 26 seconds to rate 1:57.1 and take record to 12 wins in 24 starts.
It was not all smooth sailing for Purdon, with the outstanding Have Faith In Me blotting his copybook the PETstock Free-For-All, 1710m.
Sent out a $1.60 favourite, he galloped as the field formed up behind the mobile and lost 100m.
He managed to catch the field and go to the deathseat before weakening to finish fifth.
Purdon had his first Ballarat Cup night double in 2012 – the year he won the cup with Highview Tommy – and repeated it in 2013 and again last year.
