The ex-military chopper, loaned from America, will be tested for the first time in Victoria on Monday and will be based at Ballarat.
Emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley said the trial run was a great opportunity to use the aircraft and test its capabilities.
“It would have to be one of the fastest (aircraft) in the sky as far as travel speed and air speed,” Mr Lapsley said.
PAY’S helicopters has brought aircraft to Victoria and it is piloted by US-based Timberline pilot Brian Jorgensen.
“This gives us another tool in the toolbox,” Mr Jorgensen said.
“It can put a lot of water on a fire in a short amount of time. Last week it put 220,000 litres of water on a Canberra fire in two hours.”
The Fire Hawk’s model military based aircraft have night vision capability. Mr Lapsley said EMV was still planning to test night vision firefighting in Ballarat this February.
