Humour from over the ages and all over the globe is the theme of a Federation University hosted seminar this week. Called Humour: Here and There; Then and Now, the program includes presenters from Australian, New Zealand and Canadian universities.

Themes covered are cartoons and visual humour, history and humour, film and TV, politics and history, and talk and language. A private viewing was also held on Wednesday of the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s political cartoon collection.
Wanda Campbell of Nova Scotia’s Acadia University will present on Canadian short stories by Margaret Atwood and L.M. Montgomery and their use of humour to explore gender relationships. “It’s a look at quite a serious issue in a comic way,” Ms Campbell said.
Cao Ying of Western Sydney University will speak on humour and gender in Chinese sitcoms, particularly in how they differ from the western humour in shows such as Friends.
The seminar is being hosted at Federation University’s SMB campus.
