Mr Bromley said they purchased the former watering hole in December after deciding they wanted to raise their children in Ballarat.
While Mr Bromley says he’s made no decisions about what he’s going to do with the former hotel, he wasted no time in removing the much-maligned tin louvres and cladding that obscured the second storey windows of the 1887 bluestone and brick building.
“We’re trying to get to know it a little bit,” says Mr Bromley, “and get a sense of it, and of Ballarat. We love it.
“We live in Daylesford half the week and Melbourne the other half, but we really fell in love with Ballarat.”
Mr Bromley and Yuge say an art gallery is planned for the shops on Mair Street, and accommodation upstairs.
Mr Bromley is well known for his paintings of images that reference children's books and for his nudes. He has been an Archibald Prize finalist four times.
