And according to teammate Jason Johannisen, it may require surgery and about six weeks on the sidelines.
The 26-year-old Roughead was a notable absentee from the Western Bulldogs’ light training session in Ballarat on Monday morning, just two days after he went down with what appeared a serious knee concern during the pre-season clash with Melbourne.
Roughead, originally from Ballarat, flew for a ball with Demons big man Max Gawn and was left visibly distressed and holding his right leg.
Bulldogs assistant coach Chris Maple said the club will be guided by its medical staff on a time frame for Roughead’s planned return to the field.
“There is some pain in the hamstring so we'll get more indication in the next couple of days where he's at,” Maple said.
Roughead has just over a month to get himself fit for the club’s round one encounter with Collingwood on March 24.
The Bulldogs have two more pre-season matches to play against the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns.
