His distraught mum Jess Kimpton did not know what to do. She called the fire brigade who spent 30 minutes cutting the crank and used the “jaws of life” to free Keith’s leg.
Ballarat City leading firefighter Nathan Duggan said Keith was remarkably calm throughout the ordeal but was distressed that his bike could no longer be ridden.
“He was quite happy and relaxed (during the rescue), which made our job easier,” Mr Duggan said.
“He’s a brave little fella.”
Mr Duggan and fellow firefighters were so impressed with Keith’s behaviour they decided to pitch in and surprise the three-year-old.
“We pitched in a bought him a new bike … we were impressed by how nice and relaxed he was,” Mr Duggan said.
Ms Kimpton said she was relieved her son was safe and said he would be thrilled to ride around the yard on his brand new bike.
