The 32-bed Gardiner-Pittard ward was open to the public for guided tours until 2pm on Saturday before it starts taking patients on Monday.
Nurse unit manager Nicole Snibson said the tours provided the community with a unique opportunity to see the general surgical ward before it’s operational.
“It’s so different from the other ward block (the Henry Bolte wing),” Ms Snibson said.
“It has a higher component of single rooms and state-of-the-art features.”
Ms Snibson also said the ward had the same views as Yuille House.
Touring the ward, Rae Liston said it was “lovely and bright and fresh” with “lots of space”.
The Deakin Medical School teaching areas next to the Gardiner-Pittard building was also open for tours.
