Sovereign Hill has won the Qantas Australia Tourism Awards’ Best Major Tourist Attraction gong for the second year in a row and the fourth time overall.

The outdoor museum beat out the Kakadu National Park, the Sydney Bridge Climb and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service Freycinet National Park in a ceremony in Darwin on Friday night.
It follows Sovereign Hill being named Victoria’s Major Tourist Attraction at the RACV Victorian Tourism Awards last year for the third year running, along with the People’s Choice for Favourite Regional Attraction Experience for a second year.
Its Christmas in July event was also awarded silver in the Major Festival and Events category.
Sovereign Hill chief executive officer Jeremy Johnson credits the win to innovative events like Winter Wonderlights and how the museum brings the goldfields story alive.
“We continuously strive to deliver engaging and entertaining experiences to our visitors, and are proud that our innovation, through events like Winter Wonderlights, has been recognised,” Mr Johnson said.
“Not only is this win a credit to the staff and volunteers who work to deliver an innovative, authentic experience at Sovereign Hill, but also wonderful recognition from our visitors, who continue to visit Sovereign Hill every year.”
Sovereign Hill also won the Major Tourist Attraction in 1993, 2005 and 2015.
Creswick Woollen Mills was also nominated in the Tourist Attractions category and Cave Hill Creek in the Standard Accommodation section.
