More than 500 participants signed up for this year’s Relay For Life event which is currently underway at Llanberris Reserve, helping raise more than $70,000 for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services.
Relay For Life Ballarat coordinator Nick Wald said the annual event, which continues to grow each year, became an important date on the calendar for those affected by cancer.
“Cancer itself isn’t an enjoyable aspect of life, so to put on an event to help (survivors and carers) forget about it for a day is important,” he said.
For ovarian cancer survivor and founder of Ballarat’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness support group, Karen Welsh, the day was also about raising awareness.
“We want to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms, not just of ovarian cancer but all cancers,” she said.
“We want to share a message for people to be vigilant with their own health and share their family history.”
