Two people were airlifted to Melbourne hospitals following a collision on the Sunraysia Highway at Waubra on Saturday.
Sergeant Ross Humphries of Ballarat TMU said the crash happened 15 kilometres west of Waubra about 12.30pm.
The male driver of a white Holden station wagon and the female driver of a grey Hyundai hatchback, who were the only occupants of the vehicles, both had to be cut out of their cars by the Ballarat Rescue Unit.
The male, aged 46 from Melbourne, received serious leg injuries and the female, 54 from Ballarat, had critical injuries to her lower body.
The Sunraysia Highway was closed at Quoin Hill Road, Waubra, for several hours while the drivers were freed from their vehicles and the road cleared.
Sergeant Humphries called on anyone who witnessed the accident to contact him at Ballarat TMU on 5336 1306.
The Waubra crash followed a fatal smash at Newlyn North on Friday evening.
A male driver of a SUV died at the scene after the vehicle he was driving and a small truck collided on the Midland Highway.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed one person was assessed on scene and later taken by ambulance in a serious condition to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital for observation.
It is understood this was a male passenger of the car.
A male driver of the truck was not injured.
The highway was closed between the Dean-Newlyn Road and Telegraph Road.
Meanwhile, a small house fire caused Sherrard Street in Ballarat North to be blocked off near the corner of Howitt Street at lunchtime on Saturday.
Three fire brigade units arrived on the scene and quickly got the fire under control.
The fire started about 12.20pm and was contained by 12.45pm.
