A major Melbourne train line remains partially suspended after an overhead power fault ground trains to a halt on Saturday night.

The Sandringham line was suspended about 7.40pm so that Metro could carry out repairs, leaving passengers stranded overnight.
Works to fix the line are continuing on Sunday, with the train line not expected to fully reopen until 8pm.

Power was restored between South Yarra and Elsternwick about 7.45am.
Buses will continue to replace trains between Elsternwick and Sandringham until the fault has been repaired.
A Metro spokesman said trains were expected to run close to timetable between Flinders Street and Elsternwick.
