Violinist Sergey Didorenko, soloist in the Gm concerto “Summer”of Vivaldi, is well-known to local audiences as the virtuoso leader. The subtle dynamic contrasts and lyricism counterbalance the fireworks achieved with ease. The precise ensemble work put spark and polish into the Vivaldi while “The Carnival of Venice” of Paganini, which closed the concert gave Didorenko the opportunity to display a myriad of string techniques in a convincing musical performance. Ana Palacios Castellano (flute) brought a different tonal colour to the proceedings in Mozart’s :Serenade for Flute and Strings KV285” and Francois Borne’s “Carmen Fantasy”. With flawless technique and a warm tone she delivered the elegance and cantabile required of the Mozart and the passion and power appropriate to the character of Carmen as portrayed by Borne.
Refinement and precision...was maintained throughout...
“Cellist Dmitri Gornowsky provided the surprise of the concert with a fine reading of Boccherini’s ninth ‘cello concerto. This is a distinctively different style of writing for the late classical period, with less predictable tonal colours well explored. The refinement and precision of this ensemble was maintained throughout, while the enjoyment of performance was always evident.
