Major Collision Investigation Unit police are investigating the crash that left three people in hospital.
Ballarat Senior Sergeant Neale Robinson said the driver of a white Holden Commodore was turning right from Rubicon Street into Cromwell Street at around 2pm when a green Mitsubishi Lancer smashed into its rear.
Two men quickly escaped from the Lancer and fled on foot leaving their injured female passenger behind.
Senior Sergeant Robinson said both vehicles were severely damaged and not drivable.
“The victim and a female occupant of the offending vehicle were conveyed to Ballarat Base Hospital by ambulance,” Senior Sergeant Robinson said.
Another passenger later presented at the Ballarat Base Hospital for treatment.
The accident comes days after Inspector Greg Payne reinforced the seriousness of fleeing car crashes.
“Each is a separate incident that has its own individual circumstances however leaving the scene of a collision where someone is injured puts lives at risk,” Inspector Payne said.
“Drivers should immediately render assistance and obtain the services of an Ambulance and Victoria Police.
“Drivers are required by law to stop and render assistance and failure to do so is a serious criminal offence and they will be prosecuted.”
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
