Jack was awarded for his composition Nightfall’s Lament.
Jack said the piece explores “the emotion of sorrow and its complexities” and was inspired by the emotional intensity of a piece from pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Jack began formal piano lessons at the age of five and started to compose music at six. At 12 he performed The Night’s Lullaby with the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra – a work he composed and orchestrated in its entirety.
World-renowned music psychologist, teacher and researcher Professor Adam Ockelford has referred to Jack as an “exceptional young musician” who can produce music that “conveys a range of emotions”.
His other achievements include being a four-time prizewinner in the Australian Children’s Music Foundation Song Writing competition.
