CFA Rescue units worked to free the male driver,46, for more than an hour, after his car collided with a tree near Whites Road as it drove towards Ballarat.
Police have released the following statement this morning:
“Police are investigating following a single vehicle crash in Remembrance Drive Cardigan around 5.20pm on Sunday 12 March.
A white Nissan Patrol was being driven in an easterly direction along Remembrance Drive when the male driver has driven off the road and struck one tree and then a second tree.
The driver, a 46-year-old man from Alfredton, was trapped in the vehicle for a short while before being extracted and airlifted to a hospital in Melbourne, in a serious condition.
The passengers, two boys, an 11-year-old and a four-year-old, were also airlifted to hospital in serious conditions.
Police have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the incident.

YESTERDAY: Emergency services have freed a man from a single car collision on Remembrance Drive at Cardigan shortly after 5pm on Sunday.
CFA Rescue units worked to free the man after the car collided with a tree near Whites Road as it drove toward Ballarat.
After being trapped for almost an hour, the driver was transported by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullens said reports indicated the man had suffered chest, abdominal, pelvic and lower limb injuries.
Two primary school aged children were also due to be flown to the Royal Childrens Hospital. The elder boy suffered abdominal injuries from a seat belt, Mr Mullens said.
The younger boy suffered lacerations to the chest also from a seat belt injury. They were transported by road ambulance to the Ballarat base Hospital in a stable condition where they were due to be flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Remembrance Drive remains closed in both directions while police divert traffic and arrange for the helicopters to land..
