Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council and Ballarat City Football Club launched Harmony Week on Friday with a pledge to stamp out racism.
The two groups have joined the national campaign, Racism. It Stops With Me, which aims to give Australians the tools to take practical action against racism.
Speaking at Friday’s launch, Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council chairperson Constantine Osuchukwu said “multiculturalism is the norm in Victoria”, and shared values would “trump” divisive politics at home and abroad.
“We are all diverse and different but also one united and it’s wonderful that we can get together,” Fr Osuchukwu said.
“This is our answer to the Trumps, the Pauline Hanson’s of this world, that we are in this together.”
Under 18s player Buk Malek said Ballarat was a welcoming city.
“It’s a great message that we’re getting out, how we’re spreading awareness about accepting others. I’m from a different background and I feel welcomed to be a part of this community.”
