Head of history Peter Livingston said the former mayor provided an “expertise” in terms of policy and what politicians could do for the community, which would only help the pupils in their unit on government.
“There is sometimes an apathy towards the political system and if we can engage kids it helps them connect to their community,” Mr Livingston said.
He said the pupils already had an appreciation of politics after an exercise where they created their own political parties, then spoke about what they would stand for and in what ways they would change the community.
“That was a good demonstration of how much they’ve taken on board in terms of the importance of politics to them in their lives,” Mr Livingston said.
