Yates, an all-rounder with the Mounties, was one of three Ballarat Cricket Association players named in the side, finding his place alongside Wendouree wicket-keeper/batsman Heath Pyke and North Ballarat’s English import Thomas Phillippe.
The rest of the team includes players from the Grenville (three), Gisborne and District (two), Castlemaine and District (one), Maryborough and District (two) and Pyrenees (one) cricket associations.
Riddell’s Mick Allen was selected as captain.
The criteria required regions to select two opening batsmen (players who would normally open the batting for their team), four middle-order batsmen (players who would normally bat between three and six), an all-rounder, a wicket-keeper and four bowlers (one has to be a spinner). Selections were to be based on statistics only.
