Tom Berry, Josh Chatfield, Aiden Domic, Jordan Johnston, Lloyd Meek and Callan Wellings will all have the opportunity to play their way into Vic Country’s best 35 over the next six weeks.
The GWV Rebels have a strong representation in the squad with the fifth-most amount of players selected in the squad out of the 12 TAC Cup clubs.
Two of its players, Callan Wellings and Lloyd Meek, are among eight over-age players.
The squad – minus its 15 AFL academy players – played two matches against Vic Metro on Good Friday with all bar one of the Rebels playing, Josh Chatfield missed with a lower-back niggle.
The players will now have five TAC Cup matches to put their case forward for the final squad. The selected players will take part in a camp on May 26-28 prior to the NAB AFL under-18 Championships.
Vic Country will face the Allies on June 11, Vic Metro on June 24, Western Australia June 30 and South Australia on July 5.
Greater Western Victoria Rebels talent manager Phil Partington said it was great to see the club again well-represented among the state’s best.
“They’re getting opportunities to go to the next level which we’re pleased with,” Partington said.
“It’s not only for the under-18s, we’ve got a good look at the under-16 boys as well and the girls in the Vic Country side.”
Representing Vic Country provides players a great opportunity to take on the best under-18 talent in the country under the watchful eye of AFL recruiters.
That opportunity will be felt even more so by over-ager Callan Wellings.
Wellings impressed last season for the Rebels, finishing third in its best and fairest – behind draftees Hugh McCluggage and Willem Drew – however, he did not find his way to an AFL club.
Wellings has dominated across the first three rounds, among the side’s best three players each outing.
The AFL system is filled with players that were not drafted in their draft year, Wellings will be hoping to add his name to that list and a Vic Country guernsey would help greatly.
