Mr Arif, a Shepparton mechanic, took the 20-question multiple choice test on Thursday just after the Prime Minister announced it would be revised to include more "real Australian values".

"It's very inspiring for me that we live together in a multicultural way, I don't see such a thing in other countries," he said.

Mr ???Arif came to Australia seven years ago as a student, eventually applying for permanent residency and now citizenship.

"I have so many friends in Shepparton now including indigenous Australians. Initially I had no idea how to live with other communities because in Pakistan I mainly lived with other Pakistanis."

Mr Arif said the most important issue in the quiz should be law.

"We have been living here so we know the names of places. I think if there were more questions about law, it would be much easier for people getting citizenships," he said.

"It's a good opportunity for them to learn what are their rights and what are the rights of other people."

The mechanic also said immigrants who can't speak English well are struggling with the test.

"English is compulsory, which is why it was hard for my cousin who didn't even finish year 10 in Pakistan."

"For me it's easier. I read newspapers a lot and I've travelled all over Australia so I only needed to study for about five hours," he said.

Aspiring Australian citizens are given a booklet or DVD to study by the immigration department, along with sample questions and tutorials on the website.

The test is only one element of the citizenship requirements but it has attracted controversy in the past, including a proposal to include a question about Sir Donald Bradman's Test average.

Targeted questions such as: "Is it OK to assault your partner behind closed doors?", and: "Is it acceptable to keep girls from school?" are among Prime Minister Turnbull's proposed changes.

"We are putting Australian values at the heart of citizenship processes and requirements," Mr Turnbull said.

"Membership of the Australian family is a privilege and should be afforded to those who support our values, respect our laws and want to work hard by integrating and contributing to an even better Australia."
