Police believe the man, 20, was driving along Centre Road when he mounted the footpath and ploughed into multiple billboards before he crashed into a power pole, about midnight, early Sunday morning.

A number of resident performed a citizen's arrests, restraining the man as he attempted to flee the scene after the crash, according to police.

The Glen Waverly man, who was in the car alone, returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.157 - more than three times the legal driving limit.

His licence was immediately suspended for 12 months and his vehicle was impounded for a month at a cost of $1052.

He is expected to be charged on summons with drink-driving and other traffic-related offences.

Mid-drive switch

The incident took place the night after a man was caught drink-driving with an unrestrained child in the back of his car.

Police intercepted a car on Glen Eira Road, Caulfield, about 10pm Friday, after officers spotted a car driving with no headlights in wet conditions.

After being signalled by police to pull over, the man driving the car attempted to switch seats with a female passenger who was sitting beside him, police said.

But the transfer was particularly tricky, as the woman was holding a box of pizza.

Police also allege a five-year-old girl was lying on the back seat without her seatbelt on.

The Carnegie man, 33, underwent an evidentiary breath test and returned an alleged blood alcohol content reading of 0.178.

The car was immediately impounded at a cost of $905, and the man is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and other traffic-related offences.

Victoria Police is in the midst of an operation to improve the safety of the state's roads.

As part of Operation Nexus, police are targeting speed, fatigue, distraction, seatbelt non-compliance and impaired driving.
