James, 14, happens to have Down syndrome. His mother Wendy McNabb believes early intervention is the key to ensuring young people with Down syndrome can reach their potential. She is urging employers and the wider community to give everyone a chance and understand their true abilities.
“James has the same needs and the same thoughts as any other kids,” Ms McNabb said.
“I would love it if he could get a job anywhere.”
Down Syndrome Victoria will run a dinner on April 27 and the following three workshops on April 28. Early days support workshop, living life to the full and navigating the early years will inform parents of the support opportunities open to people with Down syndrome.
Adult support worker Yvonne Harris said the series of events provided a relaxed networking opportunity for parents and carers.
“It is about supporting families through the process. It’s about ensuring families have the support in place to offer everyone the equal opportunity to live the life they want to live.”
Ms McNabb said early intervention was absolutely vital and something she believe had helped James reach some of the many achievements he has made to date – including participating in the special Olympics.
James, like many children with Down syndrome, experienced congenital heart issues and underwent open heart surgery soon after his birth.
Ms McNabb said it was vital parents understood health risks, what to look out for a where to seek help.
James, who attended kindergarten and primary school at Pleasant Street Primary School, completed physio and speech therapy from a young age and socialised with children at day care. James, now in year 8 at Ballarat Specialist School, enjoys woodwork and sports.
“I genuinely believe with early intervention children can achieve absolutely amazing things,” Ms McNabb said. downsyndromevictoria.org.au
