On July 1 the RSL will conduct a major march to commemorate the anniversary of the avenue’s planting, with up to 400 people expected to take part.
“It will be a big thing for Buninyong but we think these people deserve to be remembered like this,” Buninyong RSL president Raymond Mende said. “There'd been no money spent here and it's been neglected compared to other avenues, so this funding will allow us to make it a really big event.”
The avenue features 164 trees which commemorate the men from the former Shire of Buninyong who lost their lives WWI.
As well as the march, a detailed book with information of all 164 soldiers will be created for the date.
Buninyong MP Geoff Howard said “this important event will enable local school children and the broader community to learn about those that served”.
Almost $10,000 was also given for the production of three short films about WWI made by Ballarat descendants of veterans.
