The high speeds which were achieved by bonding together three antennae used as part of the fixed wireless technology, while speeds of up to 400 megabytes a second were achieved using just one antenna.
The current rollout of fixed wireless to about 600,000 households across the country is expected to deliver speeds of 25 megabytes per second, substantially less than the trial speed.
NBN achieved the speeds by using a spare operating sector along an already established fixed wireless tower before installing additional radio equipment.
NBN chief executive Bill Morrow said “our ability to deliver gigabit speeds on fixed wireless demonstrates our continued focus on identifying and implementing tech advancements as and when they are needed, across all technologies”.
The high speed trails come one week after City of Ballarat infrastructure and environment director Terry Demeo said the NBN rollout had caused $16 million worth of damage throughout the local government area during the rollout.
