The 17-year-old finished 20th overall, but was competing against more experienced athletes in her first proper triathlon.
Her school sports coordinator, Ballarat High School’s Rob Simmonds said Van Roosmalen was pleased with the result and eager to build on it in the coming years.
“That’s a real positive sign. that was the definite highlight for her – number one Victorian,” Simmonds said.
“It’s her first major triathlon...she said that she’s learnt that she’s got to work a lot harder with her swim leg and her ride leg – she was really happy with how her run went. But just gave them too much in the swim leg and then she wasn’t in the pack and couldn’t work with anybody.
“She’s spurred on to go bigger and better next time.”
Van Roosmalen now enters the cross country season, but will also take a focus to improving her swim and bike legs in the process.
