A graduate of the New York Juilliard School and the Victorian College of the Arts, Ms Almonte has a reputation as a gifted, versatile and sensitive artist, and performs regular solo and chamber music recitals around Australia and overseas.
She has won numerous awards, including the ABC Young Performer’s Awards and the international chamber music competition in Italy, “Trio di Trieste”.
Her recital in Ballarat is “quite romantic”, says Ms Almonte.
“I wanted to play the Liszt because the Gondoliera e Tarantella – and the Chopin Scherzo – have these beautiful hymns in the midst of these very showy octaves, and for the students, I wanted to show them pieces that are wonderfully exciting to play.”
Another aspect of the recital is the performance of a work by the little-known Australian composer Moneta Eagles. Her Sonatina was written in 1954. Her later career involved writing scores for film. She died in 2003.
“I thought it was very important to be performing Australian music by composers that we don’t hear and we should be celebrating,” says Ms Almonte.
Ms Almonte has a prolific educative career and teaches piano and chamber music at the University of Melbourne. She is involved in several projects with the Australian and Melbourne youth orchestras and the Australian Music Examination Board, where she recorded and produced the recent solo piano series.
The recital at the Wendouree Performing Arts Centre will feature Schubert ‘s Opus 90 Impromptus, the Chopin Scherzo No.3, Australian composer Moneta Eagles’ Sonatina, and Liszt’s lilting Gondoliera e Tarantella from Venezia e Napoli.
