Although you choose your engagement ring first, make sure you take into consideration matching it with the wedding ring as more often than not they will be worn together. Consider the shape of the engagement ring and if it will still sit well and comfortably on your finger when matched to a wedding ring. More women are giving thought to how their ring will fit into their everyday life and are selecting styles that are more practical for daily wear.
You can choose from yellow or white gold to titanium or platinum for your rings. A yellow gold wedding ring is a traditional choice where 14k and 18k gold are less pure, but harder and therefore more likely to make a durable wedding ring. Platinum is another worthy option as it is highly resistant to damage but its rarity explains the price tag.
No matter what metal you choose remember that it can tarnish or suffer wear and tear over time so always look after them by removing them when doing the dirty or sweaty jobs. Gardening, playing sport and exposure to chemicals and cleaning agents can play havoc in the long run so maintain its shine by having it regularly checked and cleaned by a professional.
Most importantly, buy from a reputable jeweller. Purchasing diamonds off the internet can be a disaster and there have been many horror stories from couples who have bought “discounted” diamonds which are of an inferior quality. A jeweller’s role is to guide couples and provide options as well as advice when it comes to choosing the perfect engagement ring. Remember the cut of a stone is responsible for the sparkle given from the light refraction. More than 60 per cent of the value of a diamond is in the cut, not the clarity or the colour.
Some do’s and don’ts:
- Do fix a budget and stick to it.
- Do your research and visit several reputable dealers.
- Don’t wait until the last minute to find something you really love.
- Don’t pick anything because it is today’s fashion, it will date easily. Consider something more timeless.
- Don’t be persuaded into buying anything you don’t absolutely love – this will be a constant reminder of your special day.
- Do consider your lifestyle.
- Do get your rings insured. Losing a ring is heartbreaking, not being able to replace it would be devastating.
