When choosing your bridesmaids' dresses, there are a few things you'll need to consider, such as their individual body shapes, complementary colours and budgets.
Try to find a style and colour (or a range of styles and colours if you prefer) which will flatter all your bridesmaids. Some colours will look fantastic on one, but will completely wash out the other. A great way around this problem is to select a base colour, then purchase dresses in different hues of the same colour to cater for everyone. If you want all your bridesmaids in the same colour and style, arrange a girl's shopping trip so you can see what fabric will suit the best.
Body shape will also help you decide what style to purchase. Of course everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, and some brides will select a fabric and then have different styles made up to suit each bridesmaid. Generally speaking, simple lines and classic cuts will suit most figures, and a skillful seamstress will be able to custom fit each dress to each bridesmaid.
Keep a budget in mind when looking at dresses. Be aware of what each bridesmaid can afford without feeling stretched and try to stay within that figure. Consider buying the dresses from a boutique if that helps keep costs down.
Finally, talk with your bridesmaids. They are there to make your day special, and if you have any reservations or have your heart set on a particular colour, talk it through and work everything out well before your wedding day.
Trends to look out for in the coming season.
Lace
Lace is perfect for weddings this year. Bridesmaids are creating class and contrast by teaming lace with backless, knee-length and long sleeved style dresses.
Floral
Many brides are linking the vintage look with floral to create a classic and classy look that their maids can wear again.
Strapless or one shoulder
Best suited to a bevy of younger brides. Showing some skin is in this year.
Navy
Navy is a popular colour this year, as are pastel colours and shades of blush.
Sequins
A gorgeous option for evening weddings is a bridesmaid dress dripping in sequins.
Metallic
Brides are making sure their wedding has a grand effect by adorning their bridesmaids in gold and bronze. While this trend works better with one or two bridesmaids, it is perfect for black-tie occasions.
