Healthy kids learn better, and this year’s Education Week, from May 21-27, celebrates a ‘Healthy Mind, Healthy Body’ theme.
With this theme in mind, the Victorian Government is funding a range of initiatives in schools across the state to help set young people up for learning, and reach their full potential.
These initiatives include breakfast clubs to make sure children have a healthy start to the day and kitchen gardens where young people (and sometimes their parents) can learn about healthy eating.

The Government is establishing a program of Doctors in Secondary Schools, as well as introducing the Respectful Relationships curriculum so every student can feel safe and confident and build healthy and respectful relationships with others.
Education Minister James Merlino knows the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles.
He recently attended the School Sports Awards, cycled with his kids to school for Ride to School Day and kicked a football with professional women footy players who are teachers in government schools.
“Each of these events was firstly a great opportunity to get out and about, to hear stories of hard work and resilience, and to see Victoria’s kids in action, but they also gave me the opportunity to talk about the importance this Government is placing on our kids being healthy and active,” Mr Merlino said.
“We know having an active lifestyle is important – for our health, our wellbeing and our success. As part of our plan to build Victoria as the Education State, we have included physical activity targets. We want our kids to be physically active; but we also want them to be happy and engaged and ready to learn.”
By 2025, the proportion of students doing physical activity for an hour a day, five times a week, will grow by 20 per cent, and students reporting high resilience will grow by 20 per cent.
“By working towards and achieving these targets, we are ensuring Victorian students are developing both in and outside of the classroom to achieve their best, regardless of their circumstances,” Mr Merlino said.
