It will replace the saleyards at Delacombe with more space and 30,000 square metres of selling pens.
Developer Regional Infrastructure Pty Ltd will move ahead with construction at the site near the Sunraysia Highway and Miners Rest Road.
Regional Infrastructure managing director Garry Edwards said the Central Victorian Livestock Exchange north of Ballarat would take more than a year to complete.
“The new CVLX facility is approximately 8000 square metres larger than the existing La Trobe Street facility, with over 30,000 square metres of selling pens under roof,” he said.
”Construction of the project is expected to take between 12 to 15 months.”
The project was challenged by Miners Rest residents and a group of disgruntled stock agents initially raised objections.
However Mr Edwards said concerns about the saleyards size had been addressed.
“The final design was amended to incorporate some features, to include specific requirements to accommodate concerns from the stock agents,” he said.
“That includes confirmation that the new facility is much larger than the existing site.”
It will cost about $24 million to build the saleyards.
Regional Infrastructure has also committed to awarding 50 per cent of contract work to Ballarat companies.
Mr Edwards said the largest sales to have ever been hosted in the region would be accommodated at the new site.
”RLX is committed to delivering this essential project to the Ballarat region and as such we are extremely excited that construction is commencing on what will be a world class facility for the livestock producers of central Victoria,” he said.
“Throughout construction regular project updates will be made available on the CVLX website about the various activities being undertaken at the site.
“An open day will also be held during the construction process to let interested parties view the facility.”
Landmark divested its half-share interest in Regional Infrastructure in July last year.
