Are there any swallows still around or have they all gone north? How far do they go?

Many welcome swallows remain in the Ballarat district year round, but up to three-quarters move north for the winter. They go to northern Victoria and into NSW and southern Queensland, but probably not much further.
Some of our local population seems to congregate at places where more shelter and more insects are available. Lake Wendouree is one such place. Swallows can almost always be seen there right through the bleakest days of winter. Other wetlands, such as Mullawallah (Winter Swamp), support swallows throughout the year. The birds feed mostly on the sheltered side where a few insects can be found.
