Town Crier Brian Whykes has been farewelled at tonight’s Ballarat City Council ordinary meeting where he will be recognised for his years of service.
Mr Whykes was appointed to the position in 1987.
Now aged 85, the long-time crier has been named the nation’s best on five occasions.
Hedley Thomson will be handed the Town Crier position on Friday, 11am at the Ballarat Town Hall.
Ballarat City mayor Samantha McIntosh said Mr Whykes had been a great ambassador.
“On behalf of all the Councillors and the City of Ballarat we would like to thank Mr Whykes for his dedicated service as Town Crier and wish him well during his retirement,” she said.
“It’s fitting to acknowledge his contribution in honouring the city’s important role in Australia’s town crying story.
“We also wish to acknowledge and thank Mr Hedley Thomson for accepting the important community function and responsibility.”
