Shane Gannon, 37, did not appear at Ballarat Magistrates Court on Thursday for a committal mention because a video link was unavailable.
His lawyer, David Tamanika, told the court Gannon would be assessed for another psychological report.
"We have one psychological report with a view on a mental impairment plea," Mr Tamanika said.
He said Gannon was currently receiving treatment for an ongoing mental illness and he was unable to speak much about the alleged incident.
Mr Tamanika said Gannon had an appointment with a doctor on Friday.
Magistrate Ronald Saines adjourned the case to May 30 for a further committal hearing.
Gannon was ordered to appear via video link from Thomas Embling Hospital for the hearing.
The alleged murder happened at a property in Langstaffe Drive, Wendouree, on November 2.
