The Country Fire Authority was called to the property on South Street at 12.52pm and managed to get the blaze under control within 10 minutes.
Nobody was injured in the fire and while it had originally threatened neighbouring properties, the blaze was put out before it moved on from the building.
Fire crews remained at the premises for most of the afternoon.
CFA spokesperson Jenny Clow said the tragic accident was a timely reminder for people to be vigilant when drying clothes indoors in the cooler months.
“Members of the community are reminded to ensure if drying clothes using a heater they ensure the clothes are located well away,” Ms Clow said. “It doesn’t matter what type of heater it is, it just heats up and heats up and ignites.”
