Mr Cain, who drove construction of the arena in the 1980s, rejected calls to rebadge the stadium named in Court's honour in the wake of controversy over the tennis great's views on same-sex marriage.

Court, the 74-year-old founder of Victory Life Church in Perth, announced in the West Australian on Thursday that she would stop using Qantas "where possible" in protest at the airline's promotion of same-sex marriage.

"Your statement leaves me no option but to use other airlines [where] possible for my extensive travelling," she said.

But Mr Cain said Court's position as one of Australia's most celebrated tennis players in history was reason enough for the Margaret Court Arena (part of the Melbourne Park complex) to remain.

"Leave the place alone, she [Court] is there because of her merits as a tennis player," Mr Cain said.

"This is about the home of tennis. We have arguably the best the facility in the world and it should be celebrated by the names of the great players who made Australian tennis what it is. Margaret Court should be there, forget about this other rubbish."

He implored Tennis Australia and the Melbourne Olympics Park Trust to reaffirm their commitment to the Margaret Court Arena.

Mr Cain also publicly called for the arena's third multipurpose court to be named after former Wimbledon singles champion and Australian Davis Cup legend Neale Fraser.???

The arena named after Court has taken to Twitter to distance itself - or at least its management -from her stance on same-sex marriage.

Margaret Court Arena said on Friday that they remained committed to "equality, diversity and inclusion".

Court has since doubled down on her opposition to marriage equality, addressing the controversy in an interview on The Project on Friday night.

Court said she thought most of the public would be against the name change and accused the gay community of bullying, while also appearing to attack the Safe Schools program.

"I think it's very sad that they're bringing my tennis into it. This is why I say it's becoming a bullying from the homosexual gay side of people."

The campaign for the removal of Court's name comes exactly 15 years after the name was installed following a push led by another tennis legend, Billie Jean King.

King, who won 39 open titles, is a prominent a gay rights campaigner and has been out as a lesbian since 1981.

"She [Court] won more majors than any other woman or man, and she won the grand slam," King said in 2001.

"I know Rod [Laver] won two [grand slams], but I don't think Rocket would get his knickers in a twist about Margaret sharing with him."

There were calls previously to rename the arena in 2012 when Court was quoted describing advocacy of same-sex marriage as promoting "unhealthy" and "unnatural" unions.

At the time King reportedly told American newspaper The Desert Sun that while she disagreed with Court's opposition to gay marriage, she was opposed to Tennis Australia renaming the arena.

"Get rid of her for that?" King said. "Just because you don't agree with someone? Please. She deserves it. She's a great player."

Ms King has been contacted by Fairfax Media for comment.

Marriage equality activists say it is now up to Court whether she is happy for her name to remain on a building which has stated it supports same-sex equality.

A spokesman for marriage equality group Just.equal said: "If Margaret Court is serious about boycotting businesses that support equality, she has a decision to make about whether she wants her name to remain on a building that stands for equality, diversity and inclusion. The ball is in her court."

Fairfax Media has sought comment from Court on this issue.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he did not support calls to change the name of the venue.

"Whatever people may think about Margaret Court's views about gay marriage ... she is one of the all-time greats and the Margaret Court Arena celebrates Margaret Court the tennis player," he told 3AW on Friday.
