The lightning band which ran in a line through Clunes, Creswick and Newlyn presented a spectacular display of sheet and fork lightning shortly before midnight.
At 11.30pm the entire town of Creswick was completely without power as violent lightning strikes continued westward.
Ballarat was spared the worst of the storm but still received 20mm of rain more than the total for the rest of May, most of which fell in the half hour before midnight.
About 65 customers in Clunes, Coghills Creek, Glendaruel and Tourello are still without power due to a fault along Coghills Creek Road which was caused by the storm activity, with power set to be restored to those areas by 10.30am.
Despite the conditions, the State Emergency Service were not in high demand throughout the region. The SES were called 40 times over the past 24 hours, with majority of the work coming from the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
