Ballarat City, Clunes, Kingston and Creswick Brigades attended the fire on Macs Street at 6.36pm.
Creswick Fire Brigade captain Robert Squires said the fire was caused by cooking left unattended on the stove.
“The couple had their tea and were going into the lounge to eat and whatever was left on the stove was left on and they’ve had the range hood going and it’s drawn the flame up into the vent which has then spread across into the cupboards and up into the ceiling.”
The fire was contained within 15 minutes of the brigades’ arrival.
The couple have been provided with emergency accommodation by Hepburn Shire Council.
