AS central Victorians head for the roads this long weekend, the Transport Accident Commission is urging motorists to take a break and drive to the conditions.
Last year, five people died on Victorian roads during the traditionally busy three-day weekend, with all fatalities occurring in regional areas.
With fatigue a major factor in regional crashes, the TAC is encouraging drivers to stop and recharge at SES Driver Reviver sites, which will again operate throughout the long weekend.
TAC road safety manager Samantha Buckis said breaking up a road trip for a rest, or to swap drivers, could be a life-saving choice.
“It is a sad reality that five Victorians didn’t make it to their destination last Queen’s Birthday period and we don’t want to see any tragic headlines this weekend,” Ms Buckis said.
“Fatigue and speed are two of the major contributors to fatal collisions on regional roads and we’re imploring motorists to rest up the night before and allow plenty of time to get to their destinations.”
Driver Reviver sites will operate across the state and Marong will again play host to a Transport Accident Commission “pit stop” on Monday, from 10am to 5pm.
Free barista coffees, sausage sizzles, prizes and fun family activities will be available on the day.
Pit Stops will also operate at Balmattum and Stratford on Friday, and Bacchus Marsh, Balmattum and Dimboola on Monday.
Ms Buckis urged motorists to take advantage of the Driver Reviver sites.
“If you're heading off on a road trip for the upcoming long weekend you should factor in a rest stop every two hours to swap drivers or recharge,” Ms Buckis said.
“When you’re feeling tired or fatigued you start to lose focus and you can avoid a tragedy if you take a break when you feel the need.”
With winter weather setting in and road conditions changing, Ms Buckis said it was also crucial that motorists took extra precautions when hitting the road.
“People should check the conditions of their tyres and brakes, ensure all lights are working and switch headlights on if visibility is low.”
