Michael Dawson of Ballarat applied to appeal his jail term handed to him on June 2, but County Court Judge James Montgomery on Wednesday warned him his sentence would increase.

Defence barrister Simon Tan said he would argue his client's first offence was old and he had no criminal record at the time.

Dawson was sentenced to a court order in 2011 followed by a youth training order, which Mr Tan said could have been rolled into one sentence.

But Judge Montgomery was not convinced.

"(I am) warning that the sentence may increase," Judge Montgomery said.

"Six months is lenient."

Judge Montgomery said Dawson had a significant criminal history.

Dawson withdrew the appeal application and was taken from the docks into custody.

Dawson pleaded guilty at Ballarat Magistrates Court on June 2 to theft and burglary charges.

He broke into the maternal and child health centre on Albert Street, Sebastopol, on November 11, 2010.

Two months later, Dawson burgled Coles supermarket twice to steal alcohol. Dawson committed other crimes with his brother where they attempted to steal a car and stole car batteries.

Dawson pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including theft, burglary, theft from a motor vehicle and attempted theft of a car.
