FOR nearly 20 years, Warrnambool’s Fun4Kids festival has entertained children at a time of year when staying indoors is more enticing than a blustering windswept beach.

Made up of a series of zones for kids to play in, there’s a variety of workshops where kids can get creative and special guest performers to entertain them, all wrapped up in five days of seriously good fun.
Katrina Barnes, travel, tourism and events co-ordinator at South West TAFE, has been involved in Fun4Kids for 18 years, working with the students who volunteer at the event as part of their Diploma of Events.
“As an event right on our doorstep, it’s the perfect opportunity to assess the students in a real capacity,” says Katrina. “It’s also giving back to the community.”
Here are Katrina’s top 5 things for kids to check out at Fun4Kids this year.
Woodwork. It’s probably one of the worst things to volunteer in, because you’ve got about 130 hammers banging as kids create - you definitely want some earplugs - but to see the kids leaving at the end of the day with all the things they’ve made … is fantastic. A local men’s woodworking group throughout the year cut out all the bits for kids to make a cradle, aeroplane, birdfeeder. Then they can go into the painting area and paint it if they want to.
Painting. You can never go past the different crafts and painting. Every year they change what’s available – one year it might be bow and arrows, another festival it was swords and this year is a pirate theme.
Tradie town. It’s full of big foam blocks where kids can create and make things. Often you see a big queue of kids waiting to get in, because it’s so popular.
Cooking. In previous year’s they decorated cupcakes, biscuits and sausage rolls. Kids love that sort of thing.
The performers. Over the years they’ve had some fantastic performers on stage, who are a real highlight. The TAFE students do all the accreditation, so they get to work with all the performers and help them backstage. This year they’ve got Jimmy Giggle, who’ll be really popular.
