John Moloney and his wife Marion, who own and manage the hostel, decided to build a business that would enhance the regional experience for visitors to Port Campbell, and thus, the brewery was born.
Embracing the region from the get-go, all the produce used is local where possible (and if not, then undoubtedly Australian) and the business was christened with the original name of the 12 Apostles, The Sow & Piglets Brewery.
German brewer Julian Widera has joined the team, together with John O’Grady, aka Professor Crackpot, who after 45 years in a different career, is living the post-retirement dream.
Sow & Piglets brewery produce three standard beers which are available all year – a German ale, a dark German lager and an English IPA. These three mainstream beers will be complemented with one tasty new beer every month. The seasonal beers for winter are:
- Strawberry Stout - the malty chocolate stout flavour is rounded by sweet strawberries.
- Hazelnut Brown Ale - a full-bodied beer with roasted notes, the moderate bitterness finishes this beer nicely.
- Irish Red - creamy, a bit sweet, with a lightly hopped ale.
Next to the brewery is the brew pub, where you can taste all the fresh beers on tap. Why not pack yourself some food, park yourself in the indoor barbecue area, and enjoy a taste of this new local beer.
Sow & Piglets Brewery is at 18 Tregea Street, Port Campbell.
