And that is where they want to be as they pursue a championship and promotion.
As impressive as the Vikings have been, no one knows better than first-year head coach Corey Smith that job is far from done at the halfway mark of the season.
So close is the battle at the top – Sebastopol and Bell Park are separated only by goal difference – just one slip could be the difference between securing a title and missing out.
Not only is Bell Park looming large, Point Cook is only two points back.
Smith said all Vikings had achieved so far was put themselves in a position to challenge for the championship.
He said the emphasis all season had been to get points every time they stepped out on the pitch. “That’s the mantra for every game.” They have failed to do that only once.
Vikings meet Melton Phoenix for a second time on Morshead Park’s main pitch on Saturday and should stretch their unbeaten run to nine.
Sebastopol defeated Melton 4-0 in the season opener.
While Smith has no doubt the visitors will be stronger, he says the Vikings’ expectations are securing the three points.
Isaac Ellis will mark his return to the club by lining up. He has moved back after moving to Ballarat City FC last season and will take up a forward role. He will be the 30th player to line up in the Vikings’ firsts this year.
