Is it too early for crows to be making their nests? I saw one carrying a stick to the top of a pine tree the other day and wondered whether it was making its nest already.

The little raven is the common crow in Ballarat. The first nest-builders are often seen carrying sticks in the last week of June, so your observation is slightly early, which may be due to several weeks of milder Autumn weather.
Always among the very earliest builders, the little raven joins such birds as masked lapwings (plovers) and New Holland honeyeaters in this early activity.
Sometimes the birds complete their nests within a few days and then lay their eggs, while in other years their building may proceed slowly, or even stop, especially if cold and wet weather arrives.
