The Kookaburras are battling for numbers, struggling to get over 20 under-18 players at training.
The side started the season with 22 players, but after copping a couple of injuries and now three players about to head travel overseas, which had been planned for some time, Sebastopol is facing the daunting possibility of not being able to field the necessary 14 players and is on the brink of forfeiting.
Chris Parker, part of the Sebastopol’s football department, said the club was desperate to keep its head above water to give the group of “tough” young players that have stuck by the club a chance to play each week.
He said it would be heart-breaking if it got to the stage where it had to forfeit matches – which in its current state, is a genuine threat.
“They’re a great bunch of kids, they’re hanging in there and we’ve got to try and support them as much as we can,” Parker said.
“Although the team hasn’t won a game as yet, we are very proud of them and the way they have stuck together and supported each other and our club through a very tough start to the season.
“It would be a tragedy if our numbers fell to the point where we were unable to field a team as this would mean a great bunch of young guys would not be able to play where they had committed to.
“It would be a heart-breaker for us a club if we are not able to provide them with a game.”
It is not the first time Sebastopol has struggled for numbers, also putting a call out in the early stages of 2015.
It is also without under-16 representation while its under-14 team is on top of the 14’s reserves ladder and it is fielding teams in all under-12 and under-10 competitions.
The void in the upper-bracket of the junior leagues is something Sebastopol knows it must attend to and it is hopeful this bid will see it gain some extra players prior to the June 30 deadline.
Sebastopol is not the only club struggling for junior numbers in the region, Gordon is just one other example over the last 12 months.
Parker hoped that any extra numbers could help in the short-term and also remain as long-term players.
