Judge Montgomery said he would sentence Collins on the jury verdict.
"At this age he is facing a jail sentence," Judge Montgomery said.
"His wife and children would no doubt be grappling with the conviction and what it says about his character."
The court was told Collins was married and had three children but one had died. Collins had a substantial work record, the court was told.
At one stage during the hearing, Collins wiped away tears. His wife and son were present in the courtroom, showing their support.
The plea hearing was adjourned for the defence to gather Collins' medical history, which was not ready on Friday.
Judge Montgomery will sentence Collins at the County Court of Victoria in Melbourne at a date to be fixed.
At the end of Friday’s plea hearing, Collins was lead from the dock into custody.
Collins’ trial went for about two weeks.
