Keepers put the finishing touches on the new penguin display this week, preparing it for the first two of 11 little or fairy penguins who will eventually call it home.
The new arrivals, and the new exhibit, will make their public debut on Saturday as part of the first day of the Ballarat Winter Festival.
The bright new enclosure features a panoramic view of the Victorian coast, which blends in to the sandy exhibit, native vegetation, rocks and a pool with a viewing window which will enable visitors to watch the aquatic birds swim underwater.
”Penguins are endemic to Victoria and everyone loves them,” said keeper Tim Crole. “We’ll be doing feeding, keeper talks and hope to eventually have penguin encounters when they all settle in,” he said.
