Ellis found the net late in the first half to help the Vikings record a 1-0 victory over Golden Plains at the Bannockburn Recreation Precinct.
His goal came after an earlier conversion by the visitors was disallowed for an off-side player.
The result was a big one for the Sebastopol boys, which were coming off a loss to Truganina Hornets the week before and had dropped the earlier clash against Golden Plains back in round three.
Vikings coach Corey Smith said his team was impressive in the first half on Saturday evening and described the side’s performance as probably its best of the year so far.
“I rate that side (Golden Plains) as one of the top three footballing sides in the league and I thought we completely dominated the first half and probably the scoreline flattered them at half time,” Smith said.
Saturday’s result leaves the Vikings on top of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league four west table.
The team remains two points clear of second-placed Point Cook, which beat Melton Phoenix on the weekend.
There is no play in the west division next weekend, with the Vikings now preparing for a return fixture against Newmarket Phoenix.
The round four clash between the two sides was abandoned at half time when the Phoenix didn’t return to the pitch.
