The “AFL standard” venue will host Sunday’s elimination finals on September 10 - three weeks after the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide play the first-ever AFL fixture at the quality arena.
The decision is another feather in the cap for Ballarat as it looks to utilise its newly-developed, and newly-named, stadium to attract not only big-note football matches, but a range of events.
The opportunity arose as IKON Park was unavailable at the time due to redevelopments – and Ballarat was quick to move to secure the finals fixture.
Greater Western Victoria Rebels talent manager Phil Partington said it was extremely exciting news.
“It’s really exciting. It’s an AFL quality venue and ground here in Ballarat,” Partington said.
“It’s outstanding news, we’re over the moon.”
Partington underlined the importance it held for not only football aspects, but the Ballarat economy. The by-product of having such a venue to host these types events provides the ability to bring a number of people into Ballarat, boosting the economy.
