Ballarat’s newest regional park will be officially honoured for its Aboriginal heritage next Wednesday, July 19.
Less than a year after the Canadian Regional Park was declared to keep it out of the hands of developers, it will also be recognised under its indigenous name.
Woowookarung is the official Aboriginal name for the regional park.
An Aboriginal smoking ceremony will be hosted at the Earth Centre on Mount Clear as part of the event.
Uncle Brian Bryon Powell will lead the traditional Welcome to Country on behalf of the Wadawurrung Aboriginal Corporation.
He will be joined by state government Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio and Parks Victoria chief executive Matthew Jackson.
The government first promised to set aside the land for protection when it was in opposition.
It then delivered on the election promise to protect 641 hectares in August last year.
