Division one side firms top four grip

ACU Sovereigns division one side continued its surge towards a finals berth with a pivotal win over Wilson Storage Southern Saints.

Sovereigns claimed a three-goal win, 54-51, over the Saints who entered the match just one game behind Sovereigns on the ladder.

The win sees Sovereigns a game clear in fourth position and while climbing any further seems unlikely, given it is three games behind third, a finals appearance is becoming increasingly likely.

Meanwhile, the championship team suffered a 64-46 loss.

Sovereigns were headed by nine goals at the first change and could never recover the deficit.

It sits second-last on the ladder, with three victories from 15 matches this season.

The 19/under outfit went down 50 goals to 37.

Sovereigns now have a short turn around as it prepares to face Peninsula Waves on Wednesday before returning for its second home game in Ballarat on July 30 against Geelong Cougars.

Casey Adamson has been one of Sovereigns' most consistent players.
